Metro defies stereotypes of urban education. As an inner-city school in a struggling urban district, Metro's high test scores, graduation rates, and college matriculation rates are an anomaly. Yet Metro consistently continues to excel.
The ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of Metro's student body is almost overshadowed by the atmosphere of nonchalant acceptance. Bullying and fights are effectively nonexistent. In the central cafeteria atrium, students gather and weave themselves into the fabric of a patchwork school family that embraces difference. Metro students are activists and artists, biologists and black belts, chess players and choreographers, journalists and high jumpers, musicians and mathematicians, spoken word artists and World of Warcraft beasts—and they're all friends.
This culture of acceptance between students is mirrored by the respect Metro teachers accord their students. Teachers demand hard work, but in return trust that students will behave with maturity. Students are trusted with the freedoms of an open campus policy and no bells between classes.
This atmosphere of a mutually respectful school family supports the collective culture of hard work, achievement, and nerdiness that infuses the student body. From its early days as an alternative school for bright students whose needs were not addressed by traditional classes, Metro has provided a safe haven for nerds of all sorts; intelligence and passionate interests are not only accepted but expected. Students take ownership of this school culture and embrace the Metro identity as part of their individual path to success.
Yeah Metro for the WIN
