  • Honestly I think it's the venue, and that it's recorded on a small handheld camera with the sound bouncing off the walls of the courtyard. He didn't have a monitor in front to help tune which is tough in a setting where you're being out volumed by 40 other trombones. Not an easy gig playing long tones as the sound just disappears away from you in an open setting.

  • I don't like this. So if he's playing the bass trombone, that's note an excuse for him not being able to improvise good. A professional can play any note they want high or low. He's just playing safe. It sucks!

  • That was a George Roberts solo he was playing in tribute to Mr Roberts who was in the courtyard. It's not a matter of playing it safe it's just the solo.

  • It's bass trombone, it's not a lot of fast rif's. Bass trombone is more about tone, control, and providing a stable bass line for the brass section. Not a lot of solo work for the bass trombone. The area where this was performed didn't itself to recording live.

  • Speaking of Bill Watrous, he was walking around in the beginning of the song. I saw him get up from the front row, walk towards the camera then go sit in front again. Why wasn't HE playing. I'd love to hear him play. This guy did his best but he is no Watrous. I love that guy!!!

  • Being in the audience picking apart a performance is easier than being the one actually performing. I'm a vocalist and if an artist who is an inspiration to me was in the audience, I know my performance would be less than perfect. For a musician at any level to have the honor to perform in front of an icon such as George Roberts would be an experience of a lifetime! So with that, I thought it was great!

I will have the opportunity to hear Bones West at a rehearsal in March & I can't wait.

  • Takayuki Watanabe is a Yamaha employee from Japan who was on loan to the Irvine office for 1 year. He has been rehearsing with Bones West, and although he is not a soloist or professional musician, BW gave him the thrill of a lifetime by soloing allowing him to solo with them at NAMM before returning to Japan. His hero George Roberts was there to cheer him on. How many of us can boast this?

  • MightyYT I AGREE MORE TROMBONE ESPECIALLY FROM THE ONE IN THE BACKGROUND

  • other instruments had a gig this day.

  • Give the guy a break. He looks a bit sick...LOL

  • This is a nice solo, but I dont think this guy does it justice to be honest. It doesn't feel controlled ehough, and at times too flat. I can appreciate that with a handheld camera it won't sound as good... oh well. Nice anyway. Matt Denney

  • Maybe it needs a little more Bill Watrous... Sorry, but i dont find this performer to be very in tune, and his articulations in the middle register are a little fuzzy... although he can control his low notes pretty well.
