Some quick handheld video by Peter Moseley of myself running my Allen Models Chloe for the first time. This project was about 3 years in the making. This engine is based on Ward Kimball's 'Chloe' named after his daughter, and now housed at the Orange Empire Railroad Museum. The prototype started out as an 0-4-0T named "Pokaa", acquired at the same time as Gerald Best's Olomana. Ward converted it to an 0-4-2RT and back-dated the look to the 1800's. Ours is not a copy of the original, it has various different stylings and colors based on what was available. The plans and castings for this model are available from Allen Models of Michigan, formerly Allen Models of Goleta, CA.

  • Flintridge & Portola Valley Railway. It's 7.5" gauge. On my channel there is a promo for a DVD I made about the railroad and its builders.

    Nico

  • thank you

  • At the Joshua Tree & Southern I pulled two kids on a riding car, a small gondola and a small log car full of logs, plus my riding tender which is about 500 lbs with engineer, up a 4 1/2% grade at one point. But that was pushing it. You don't want to prematurely wear out the rods and the boiler doing that. The Chloe boiler has no margin to use up, the fire has to directly replenish what is being taken out in those circumstances.

  • Not a lot, depending on the grade. One or adults plus the engineer and a lightweight car or three is the limit of comfortable, unless the track is really flat. this is a very small boiler for 7.5' gauge. If you are going to build one, I suggest using a 6" boiler, or building the Fitchburg northern variant which has a 6" boiler designed in. Gene Allen has the plans for the Fitch as well.

  • thanks... good to know. how much load could you put the chloe under though?

  • Great vid but how much did it you.

  • Interesting riding car.
