Early Bird was written by Joe Meek on the occasion of the launch this momentous satellite in May 1965, it was the world's first commercial, geosynchronous telecommunications satellite, later renamed Intelsat.

Early Bird reached no.49 in the Melody Maker charts and no.28 in Radio London's Fab 40. Joe Meek was expecting it to become another Telstar and put the Tornados back on top of the charts. Reviews by the music critics were very favourable. But the Merseysound had completely taken over the music scene by then.

Tornados line-up for Early Bird (left to right)
Ray Randall (Bass Guitar), Roger Warwick (Saxophone),
Bryan Irwin (Rhythm Guitar), Tex Cameron (Lead Guitar), Peter Adams (Drums). [Dave Watts on Keyboard is not included in photos of that time.]

  • I often hear musicians who worked with Joe speak quite bitter about not getting the recognition for their input... However it's normally the poor songwriter that never gets heard of.... The Tornados, uutlaws had a great life and I bet all the girls knew their names.... Joe meek; I guess his imfamy only came when he shot the land lady and himself... I implore all those who keep the memory of all these guys alive... Joe and Geoff would have been history a long time ago if not for their effort....

  • Good instrumental! I think they tried to make another smash hit like Telstar.

  • Tex Cameron is not on this record at all, This is Ritchie Blackmore playing the guitar so most likely it's either the Outlaws or what was left of them at that time playing the lot.

  • Ritchie Blackmore on guitar on this folks.....

  • Not one of these people were truly members of the Tornadoes. The original members had already given up by then, having realised they weren't going to be paid for the work they had previously done

  • ide love a 45 copy of this , they are just so amazing this band , should be remembered for much more than just "telstar" x x
