1995 PBS Special, celebrating Oscar Hammerstein II. Michel Bell singing "Ol' Man River" from the 1995 Revival of Show Boat! Superb! Copyright credit to PBS and Great Performances. Hence this special was only aired ONCE in 1995, this might give PBS/WGBH an incentive to print this and other rare television specials
This guy can really sing. He has miles of legato and is deeply musical. He gives us a contemplative reading - which is appropriate.
My favorite version of this piece is however not by a black bass at all but by a white bass-baritone - George London. It is very, very different from this performance.
Sam Ramey also sings the excrement out of this song. Alas black face is no longer politically correct so we aren't going to get any white basses doing this in the complete show.

I need to see the rest of this concert, the next Show Boat numbers are also great, Make Believe, and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man. Do you have the whole show on dvd? I've been looking for this special for YEARS :o)
