Son venin est neurotoxique et fait partie des plus dangereux. Outre les symptômes de nausée, de vomissements et de diarrhées, une morsure peut parfois entraîner la mort sur des personnes très sensibles (enfants, personnes âgées, personnes allergiques). Le décès est en général du à la contraction involontaire des muscles abdominaux, provoquant un arrêt de la respiration. Ces cas sont tout de même très rares car il existe un anti-venin spécifique.
