Get Smart è una serie televisiva statunitense che venne trasmessa dal 18 settembre 1965 sino al 15 maggio 1970. Introdotta nel filone delle sit-com, rappresentava in realtà una satira del genere spionistico particolarmente popolare nei tardi anni Sessanta. Negli Stati Uniti venne trasmessa dalla NBC tra il 1965 ed il 1969 e dalla CBS dal 1969 al 1970, per un totale di 138 episodi.Tre film vennero ricavati dalla serie al termine della sua messa in onda: il primo fu una versione cinematografica, prodotta nel 1980, dal titolo The Nude Bomb (distribuito anche con il titolo The Return of Maxwell Smart, e con quello di Maxwell Smart and the Nude Bomb). Il film, in cui si nota la totale assenza dell'Agente 99 (Barbara Feldon si rifiutò di partecipare al sequel), del Capo (Edward Platt era già morto qualche anno prima, nel 1974) e degli altri popolari protagonisti della serie, non ebbe un grande successo. L'unica particolarità del film è la curiosa presenza, fra i protagonisti, dell'italianissimo Vittorio Gassman. Il secondo film ricavato dalla serie fu realizzato per la televisione, nel 1989: il titolo fu Get Smart, Again! e considerato un vero e proprio sequel, a partire dal tema conduttore ma soprattutto per il tipo di umorismo del soggetto. Nel 1995 la Fox Network lanciò una nuova versione della serie che non ebbe successo (andarono in onda appena sette episodi). Nel 2008 è uscito il nuovo film, intitolato Get Smart (in Italia Agente Smart - Casino totale), con protagonista è Steve Carell, nel quale recitano anche Anne Hathaway nel ruolo dell'agente 99 e Alan Arkin come il Capo.La serie, scritta e creata da Mel Brooks e Buck Henry, vinse sette Emmy e ricevette altre 14 nomination per lo stesso premio. Vinse, inoltre, due Golden Globe.

Henry said the show came from a request by Daniel Melnick to capitalize on "the two biggest things in the entertainment world today" — James Bond and Inspector Clouseau.Brooks said: "It's an insane combination of James Bond and Mel Brooks comedy."The show aired on NBC from September 18, 1965 to April 12, 1969, after which it moved to CBS for its final season, running from September 26, 1969 to September 11, 1970. A total of 138 episodes were broadcast. The show was popular in the mid-1960s, and is often rerun around the world in syndication. The series won seven Emmy Awards and was nominated for an additional fourteen, as well as two Golden Globe Awards. The series was briefly relaunched years later, starring Adams and Feldon, with Andy Dick as Max and 99's son.Four feature-length versions have been produced: first, with part of the original cast in 1980's The Nude Bomb, then in a 1989 ABC TV Movie, Get Smart, Again!, and most recently, in a new film adaptation starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, and Alan Arkin in 2008, which then spawned a spin-off film, Get Smart's Bruce and Lloyd: Out of Control.
