Faure Pie Jesu

Gabriel Faure wrote his Requiem in 1887. The Pie Jesu is one of the movements. His style is meant to represent the happiness we find in death as we meet God face to face. In his own words -- "But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience"

Pie Jesu Domine -- Merciful Lord Jesus
dona eis requiem -- grant them rest
requiem sempiternam -- eternal rest

Lent is a period of 40 days of fast and reflection prior to Easter. The ressurection of Easter Sunday is not possible without the sacrifice of the Cross on Good Friday. Every year a group of thousand of pilgrims make their way through the streets of Jerusalem - the Via Dolorosa . Along the way the first 9 stations of the cross are marked, the remaining 5 inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre....built on the place where Jesus was crucified and buried.

The thought that came to me when contemplating the path to Good Friday was a single image. Shortly before Pope John Paul II died he was unable to attend the way of the cross commemoration in the Roman Coliseum. Instead live images were shown of him in his private room participating as the world did via television. The image of him embracing the cross struck me, and little did any of us know that he was in fact already walking his personal way of the cross that night. I've looked at video of his last Good Friday with us dozens of times since, and it's evident how aware he was of his closeness with Jesus and the happiness that would shortly follow

This is my offering of prayer in these days of reflection.

God is the author -- the composers, musicians, and those who hear simply His instruments
