Here's some advice. Get comfortable on the top and bottom position. If you can't you won't be able to do a pistol, ever! Lift your non working leg and stay in the position. Once you can hold it for a long amount of time close your eyes and move your head to the side. Also, practise box pistols. Get Naked Warrior or go to dragon door for more advice.
i do these while holding onto a fence.that way,my balance is stabilized,intact,and thus enables me to focus on churning out the quad burning reps.you can lean you're body way back as well which eliminates alot of stress on the knees."stabalizing oneself for balance" for the sake of making the effects most effective is key in my book.i dont worry about being a gracefull balance expert when it comes to single legged squats.the reps themselves enable the true effectiveness of the exercise. : )

I see. I still do the pistols but instead of one armed pushups, I do weighted dips and handstand pushups now. Btw, what combat sport are you in?
