I can think of exactly ONE occasion where religion was the scapegoat, and cult of personality was the true motive: Jonestown.

For the last two thousand years, not five minutes have gone by without somebody killing in god's name. Call it what you will, a holy war, a crusade, a jihad, etc.

When religious people try to blame atrocities on atheism, it ends up sounding pathetic, like they are just trying to point fingers at someone, ANYONE else..."look! that killer was ATHEIST! AREN'T THEY EVIL!!!

or islam) Conservatively speaking, religion NEVER allowed genocide, or any other ethically wrong doings for that matter. Its only when cults of personality influence people to a new way of ideology and thinking that society starts to change (for better or worse)

If you say atheism never killed anyone because only cults of personality, land grabbing, political ideology does that, then religion never killed anyone as well.
