I just recorded myself fiddling around with Ubuntu for a while. The theme is Dust with Humanity icons, I use Compiz and the open source radeon graphics driver. The photo management program is digiKam, the widgets are Screenlets and I use Pidgin for IM. I used entirely native Ubuntu programs to record the desktop, sound, and to edit and render the video. It took me all of around 15 minutes. I didn't even touch on a tonne of stuff you can do, like Software Centre, OpenOffice, CD burning etc etc. There are like another million Compiz settings and plugins that you can do too that I didn't show. Also, the movie that I played, and the list of movies that you see briefly, are all stored remotely on my Ubuntu server - that movie was being streamed wirelessly from the other side of the house. Neat, huh?

  • Nice, but whats your actual hardware?

  • @DrBeardo Hey, it's just a Toshiba Satellite A200 laptop. Dual Core 2.2Ghz, ATI HD2600 (with open source drivers), 3GB DDR RAM, 2x 160GB HDD's

  • Hey Benjamin good work, i've a question with Digikam can i search photos typing its filename?

  • Yep, you sure can!

  • Thanks for answering, the only thing i miss since i switched from Windows to Ubuntu is Picasa (F-spot is not for me) but now i'm going to use Digikam

    Thank you so much

BTW Your "Learn to Fly" drums cover sounds great!!!

  • You know you can install Picasa in Ubuntu, right? Just go to Google and their is a .deb you can download.

    F-Spot is horrendous.

The only thing to watch with digiKam is that it can be a REAL memory hog, especially when editing RAW files. You have to really watch the memory usage otherwise your computer will lock up as it tries to use swap.

I have 3 gigs of RAM and I can only run digiKam for about 30 mins of editing before having to restart digiKam. It's because it's a native KDE app.

  • @humphreybcdrumming Oh i didn't know that about Digikam (Memory-eater), and about Picasa, Google has no plans to update version 3.0 to 3.6, that's why i was searching an alternative, i'll try Digikam :)
