In this video, John Walton talks about ancient myth and how we might better understand it if we think about its intended functionality—that is, myths were a way to explain a cultures origin and universal significance though they lacked the advances of scientific discovery.

  • I like to think of Genesis 1-3 as a THEOLOGICAL TREATISE. It seeks to explain the nature and significance of certain real events - Creation, Man/Woman, the Fall - rather than recreate their historical circumstances. But instead of writing a straight exposition like Kant, the author uses cultural stereotypes and symbols familiar to the audience. In this way, he can pack more meaning into his account, and summarise in 3 chapters what would fill volumes. It's not History 101 or a science textbook!
