  • JvTorontoify..... I have 125 gallon tank and clean it every 6 months. You can clean it more often if you have alot of fish waste. You can also give the water a good stirring and the filter will suck up the waste also.

  • Just curious... I'm about to set up my FX5. How do you have your media set up? meaning what do you have in which baskets?

  • @gavysp

    TOP BASKET: Fluval Pre-Filter

    MIDDLE BASKET: Bio-Balls

BOTTOM BASKET: Mix of Carbon & Ammonia remover

You can use just about anything. At one point I dumped a bag of cotton balls in the bottom basket to polish the water for clarity, it was cheaper then buying the Fluval water polishing pads. FX5 is the best filter. Hope this helped you!

  • dougriffle, Many people do use it for their terrarium. The FX5 will deffinatly keep your water crystal clear considering it is made for a 250 gal tank. It filters 400 gallons per hour. I would go with the FX5 because it would keep your pets healtier and you only will need to clean the tank once every 6 months.

  • i don't know whether to get a 405 or Fx5..... I already have 2-110 aqua clear filters with a Rena filstar xp2 on a 75 gallon. i was thinking about getting rid of the Rena cannister filter ...the thought is still in the process...lol

  • @MrIAN1077 I suggest going with the FX5 it's much better than the 405, it has better filtration, it's worth the money!

  • @bobiana289 exactly,you're not paying for a name.You're paying for quality.

  • @MrIAN1077 There are FX5 knockoffs on ebay for much less, granted they pump a little less water and are smaller the price reflects the downgrades.

  • @cappettawife try eheim 2050 or 2060 compare to fluval its much better

  • @cappettawife You're talking about the filter not the tank right?...

  • @cappettawife Again, stop. Please. People like to have successful tanks.

Weekly water changes! Weekly water changes! Weekly water changes!

Stop with this six month cleaning nonsense!

  • @cappettawife Seriously, stop. You don't "clean" a tank. Ever. Period.

Water changes of a minimum for 10% weekly are all that are required. Depending on your scape you should siphon out accumulated waste from corners and other areas at the same time.

Stop giving out advice please. You're terrible at it.

  • @dougriffle The FX5 would be an overkill for something like a 55 gallon. The fluval 405 is rated up to 100 gallons. (tech specs; total output=340gal/hr, filter circulation=225gal/hr)

You would even be fine getting a less powerful pump, but I'd stick with a high capacity pump in case you decide to get a larger tank later on.

  • Is there a biological advantage with having a split water outlet or is that just to look cool?

  • ugly setup

  • On my Marineland 530 Canister, the water does not come out like this, it's suppose to be 530 gallons per hour, more than the Fluval FX5 but it comes out much slower.
