In this episode Dee discusses how much protein is needed to be healthy. He takes his information from "The Ethics of What We Eat" by Peter Singer and Jim Mason. He trusts the source for a number of reasons:

1. The book is carefully researched
2. Peter Singer, one of the authours of the book, is an internationally renown philosopher from Princeton University and is subject to a high level of scrutiny and accountability.
3. A clear effort toward to be objective and accurate.

Excerpt from the book page 227:

:The first question most people ask vegans and vegetarians is, "Where do you get your protein?" The prevalence of that question is a hangover from an earlier period, starting in the 1930s, when nutritionists believed we needed a high level of protein in our diet, and that a protein-deficient diet was a major cause of malnutrition. A lack of protein was a problem among somepeople eating little else but the tropical root crop cassava- eaten in the West mainly in the form of tapioca- which contains less protein than any other major staple food. But other malnourished people thought to be suffering from protein deficiency were in fact not getting enough calories. The idea that we need high levels of protein was disproven in the 1970s, and health authorities reduced recommended protein intakes to about a third of waht had been thought to be required. These lower levels mean that for adults eating sufficeint calories, even a diet consisiting EXCLUSIVELY of bread, pasta, rice, OR potatoes will provide adequate protein. Children and pregnant and breast-feeding women need more protein, but that is easily provided by adding beans, peas, or lentils to basic staples like bread, pasta, or rice.

  • @bookconsumption for a sec i thought he was faking it

  • @Nightbird - they have to eat mostly meat, it's fucking freezing up there so you need extra layers of fat to protect you from the cold.

also as you say, the growing season isn't very long.

  • @Nightbird You can't talk about carbs and type 2 diabetes without talking about fat. The excess fat in the blood coats insulin receptor cites, inhibiting glucose uptake into the cells where its needed. Clinical research is experience according to the people who had their type 2 reversed by eating low-fat HIGH CARBOHYDRATE diets. I'm not going to waste any more time with an old man who thinks he knows everything from being on one side of the fence his entire life. No more from me, so type away...

  • @rmalta69 Not bad for armchair research, but research & clinical experience are two different things young man. I never said fat did not affect insulin resistance. I was speaking of carbs, so focus on the issue please. Carbs, such as starchy vegetables & in the form of flour products, turn into sugar. And this adversely affects Type 2 diabetes, hence the reason MD's recommend low-carb diets for type 2 diabetics. Even going Raw Vegan shows this, which means no processed carbs or flour products.

  • @rmalta69 Ever wondered why in the last decades when countless low-fat products have hit the market & people were eating low-fat in droves why Obesity & Diabetes Type 2 became an epidemic? Because nobody told the public that excess carbs, not fat, create obesity. The Eskimo population lives primarily on Whale & Seal blubber (fat) & meat..no veggies grow in the snow..and historically they have one of the lowest rates of Obesity, Diabetes & Heart Disease worldwide.

  • @rmalta69 It is only now that they are consuming flour & excess carbs that there health is deteriorating. It is through them that we learned Omega 3 oils protect against strokes & heart attacks. Processed carbs like pasta & breads are the reason people are fat & diabetic. Cultures that primarily eat meat & fat are thinner & healthier than us -scientific fat.

  • @rmalta69 Mother Nature provided these un-processed foods for us for a reason..and indigenous cultures that still primarily eat only meat & fat in the Middle East & Africa and whom have incredible health are proof of this. She did not provide bakeries & pasta machines for another. Man cannot live without fat..it is vital in our development & health..but of course not in excess. We can do without processed flour products & are healthier without them. 12yrs of med education vs armchair surfing.

  • @Nightbird It's well know that excess dietary fat inhibits insulin function, and therefore glucose uptake (which, again, fuels all 100 trillion+ cells in our body). The carbs are not the culprit. For more UP TO DATE nutrition science/info, check out the works of Doug Graham, PCRM, Neal Barnard, T. Collin Campbell, Caldwell Esselstyn, Dean Ornish, Pritikin Longevity Center, etc... this is published clinical and epidemiological research... doctor. So, please, come down from your throne.

  • @rmalta69 My statements are a medical fact when it comes to Diabetes Type 2. I am still waiting for you to back up your statement. Instead of attacking my education..why don't you prove yours and back up your claims that you should give Type 2 Diabetics glucose?

Surely my 12 years of medical education is comparable to your education of reading a book or two and surfing the net and youtube to learn things..right? =)

  • @Nightbird Medical degree!? WOW! You SURE got me! = O

So what on earth do you know about nutrition? It doesn't require a piece of paper and copious amounts of debt to have a brain in your head to do research. Snarkity snark snark snark snark...
