I don't think anyone is trying to sell the idea that a helmet is going to prevent injury if you hit a car. I think the idea of a helmet is that if you have a stack and your head drops 2m onto the ground, a helmet is the difference between a split skull / possible death and a broken helmet / nasty headache. It is possible to die from relatively minor head trauma - think about when someone gets punched and falls backwards onto concrete. Helmets prevent minor stacks becoming major issues.

1" piece of foam and plastic? What kind of helmet are you talking about? And you're right it will not stop a 2 ton piece of metal, yet again, what can?

That's true, having such lights are distracting to both drivers and pedestrians as mentioned by a number of Amazon.com customers who have said to have own these lights.I have 08 Nite Ize Green Spokelits on my MTB and recently a pair of bike cops rode up along side me impressed by my 26 led set-up(headlights,rear signal lights, taillights, spokelits).

It's illegal to have in public where I live. The law here says it is a distraction, the most we can have is a frontal Light that has a strobe option same with the rear.

Anyway there are some 16 LED configurations that are sold at some enthusiastic stores for $15 per wheel, with a rather big yellow tag that says "For Use on Private Property or Events".
