My 1940s Webster Chicago Record Changer I bought for $1.00
Shiny, steel, and snazzy as can be, the knob on the left is power & treble,
and the knob on the right is volume.
It has a round, 6 inch speaker with bare wires hooked directly to the audio
output transformer, it is totally monaural since that's all that existed for a
good 20 years after this model was made.Inside view: http://m0nk3m4n.deviantart.com/art/Webcor-Record-Changer-Fixed-110610069
Yep the needle & cartridge aren't original due to the fact that
the needle was gone...like completely & it looked nothing like
even a 50s model cartridge/needle so I had to improvise.

  • That thing sounds amazing. $1!! Man.

  • Yeah, I was really amazed at the fact that the amp still works. Has 3 tubes and my grandpa mentioned to me the audio output tube was one of the earliest types of that kind ever made.

At least that he knew of, and he's nearly 90, haha

  • What is that blues song by the way? I love it

  • Is it blues? Hmm, it's Bob Wills - Sittin' on Top of the World.

I recorded it to mp3 from my other stereo, has noise cancellation & such.

Could send ya the mp3. It's pretty small.

  • What a super find for $1.00! Rock on!

  • Indeed! Thank ya for the comment!

  • I love old junk!

  • Ok thanks i'll look for the 78 on e-bay and stuff Thanks again.

  • @enemyace19 That's Andy Iona & his Orchestra playing "Homesick for the Islands"

The latest date I can find on the record (via patent number) is April 19, 1927! :D

I can send you a better recording (mp3) from my 1980s Realistic player if you like.

  • @grassulo Haha, I wish I knew...I got it out of some fairly decent looking turntable in which I found the motor had quit working on, and it was all very oddly designed compared to others I've seen, so I was stuck with just the cartridge.

  • @oooowwwwdddd Yes, the original was busted and had no needle. Too bad :c

But yeah, it definitely ended up sounding good. Lucky find.

  • what was the name of the hawaiian song and the group? my dad used to play that music on a lap steel guitar.

  • @monkeylad44 what the heck did you use for a cartridge?! It looks like one of those ceramic ones outta a crosley or cheap all in one stereo system. If that's running off the original amp then I'm not worried about replacing the one in my webster changer with an phanstiehl P51-3 (which would mount right up to the arm on your changer as well) I was going to have the original cart rebuilt but it seems this amp has enough gain for a ceramic one, very nice.

  • sell me for 0,50$
