United Khmer Students members felt a responsibility and commitment to address the low statistics of Cambodians in higher education. The Khmer Outreach Retention Education (KORE) Program began in 2005 with the creation of the Annual College Tour, in which Khmer youths are given a chance to tour the UCLA campus. Understanding social and economic problems of the Khmer community, UKS focused our efforts in nearby Long Beach, the largest Khmer community in the U.S. and also where many of our members come from. High school students from the LBUSD toured the UCLA campus and participated in workshops concerning relevant college information. In addition to the KORE College Tour, the KORE program consists of a year-long mentorship program and Mentorship Conference (at UCLA), in which high school students are paired with college students to provide tutoring, advice and guidance at Long Beach's Mark Twain Library. Also included in the KORE program are field trips to art and science museums aimed at exposing students to subjects that might interest them in college. The KORE program serves as an opportunity to educate the youth in understand the importance of obtaining a college education and steps to be taken to accomplish this goal.
