Great technique but I don't know whether the song can take the full romantic lied treatment with such a slow tempo. I miss the contrast btw. the sad lyrics and the strong, steady beat in the Jo Stafford interpretation, which remains the standard.I like You've Changed and Ma Cherie, on the same album, much more.
@floridaaah I discovered Jo Stafford the exact same way. And I'm so happy I did. I like this versioin of this song, but prefer Jo's. Partly because of it's amazing and subtle change in rhythm.
This is one of the most affected performances of a great song that I've ever heard. Forgettable and embarrassing. Jo Stafford made Haunted Heart haunting and unforgettable.
Jo Stafford was an avid lover of opera (she originally wanted to be an opera singer) and Renee Fleming began her carrer with jazz and standard bands. It is no wonder that they both found & recorded this beautiful song.
Oh. Wow. First heard this song done by Jo Stafford over closing credits of Jack Nicholson's movie "Two Jakes" (story took place around time of Jo's recording). Bought a Jo Stafford CD strictly to get this song. Renee is doing an even more heartbreaking take on it. This is a gem.
I was driving on a lonely stretch of highway, through the rain, from here to there into the small hours of one autumn morning when this came on the radio. I was swept with emotion and tears filled my eyes so that I had to pull-over off the highway for a minute to collect myself. Like few others, this sone really does reach into my "haunted heart". I love it.

It's so beautiful! I had to figure it out on piano and try to find someone to sing it with me. Renee are you available?
