He was one of around 16 trumpeters needed to play this. Each sight read it - it's what musicians do - so what's special about him? Which few notes did he play? This is a demanding piece of music.
No doubt Mr. Steele-Perkins could have done a bang-up job on it but the Rough Guide to the Beatles (referenced in the Wikipedia article on Penny Lane) credits David Mason as the trumpeter on that piece. I was curious after reading your message so looked it up. Thanks for metioning Crispian. I am learning more about him and his music.
The rest of the orchestra were just looking round in wonder, not surprisingly. What a lineup! If you don't know, Crispian Steele-Perkins played the solo in the Beatles song Penny Lane. People thought it was speeded up, and he couldn't possibly have played it, but he did. He walked in, sight-read it, collected his fee, and left!
This is the Akron Symphony Orchestra (Ohio) rehearsing for the 1993 International Trumpet Conference. The extra trumpeters (standing from right to left) are Bernard Adelstein, Edward Carroll, John Wallace, Al Couch, Reiner Auerbach, Arno Lange, Kenji Tamiya, Joachim Pliquett and Chrispian Steele-Perkins. The ASO trumpet section was Scott Johnston, Gary Davis and Geoff Hardcastle. The conductor is Alan Balter. The concert took place on May 22. 1993 in EJ Thomas Hall.
