I've decided to add some explanation briefly.

Balian, a crusader lost his wife to a suicide and at the time(and now) all suicides were deemed to be in Hell.

Cpl. Roe a medic, deals with loss in 1944 Bastogne where he is cut off from supplies and aid.

Robert Neville, a scientist in post-apocolypse New York struggles to stay sane as he realizes his hopes may be gone by the loss of his family and best friend in his lonely existence as seemingly the last survivor of mankind.
