Produced only once in our history, in 1997, this richly textured show is the closest thing to grand opera in the G&S repertoire. Both Gilbert & Sullivan considered The Yeomen of the Guard to be their favorite collaboration. Its story is lofty and its score is magnificent, and yet it loses not one bit of the fun and frivolity that are hallmarks of G&S shows.
The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Austin was founded in 1976 with the purpose of educating the public and preserving the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. For information visit www.gilbertsullivan.org
I saw this production tonight (June 19) after almost skipping it--thank goodness I didn't--and it compared very favorably with the Houston G&S production of 2008. The musical values of this production were much higher than most of what's available in this opera on YouTube, and it also worked as an engaging drama, maybe even better than Houston's production in that respect. There is some very solid directing going on here! A VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE.
