Jerry Brown served two terms as California's governor in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He ran for US Senate in 1982 against Republican Pete Wilson and lost. At the time, the state was in a major budget crisis. After an absence of 7 years, Brown won the position of chair of the California Democratic Party, restarting his political career. He was later elected Mayor of Oakland and subsequently California state attorney general. Brown is thought to be a possible contender for what would be a third term as governor in 2010. Although the voters imposed term limits by initiative in 1990, Brown's earlier terms as governor which predate that time do not preclude a third term.
