TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM 2010

An inside look at the Trout Unlimited North (San Francisco) Bay Chapter's highly successful Trout in the Class program for 2010. 49 Marin County 1st through 4th grade classes received 30 trout eggs for each class.

TIC is designed to teach young people to have an appreciation of conservation and the need to protect the environment.  The program is targeted to grades K-12 with the majority in the elementary grades.  NBTU provides each classroom with coldwater aquariums, thanks to a generous grant from the Marin Community Foundation.

The CA. Dept. of Fish & Game provides trout eggs, Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) helps with teacher training and fry releases and NBTU assists in the raising of them for their release as fry.  The teachers develop a curriculum that teaches about the life cycle of the fish, the environment they will need to survive, and the food that they eat.  Students learn a great deal about trout and salmon, their habitat, their predators, and the need for clean, cold watersheds.
