What's interesting, is Darkseid was originally a "nice" guy who fell in love with a beautiful woman. His mother, hating the idea of goodness, had Dessad, poison and kill Darkseid's girlfriend.
Darkseid took revenge by having Dessad poison his mother the same way.
That's when he finally changed to being pure evil, his heart died.
