Atmega8 square wave sound generator

This video shows my first real attempt to build something using microcontroller. It's atmega8 with PWM sound output (but it doesn't use built-in PWM, just portb's pin toggling), 5 diodes and 4 momentary switches. Two switches raises or lowers sound pitch. Program was written in C. Besides that I also made switchable multi-mode-diode-blinker ;-)

Do you have your port output going directly to the speakers, or is it going to an amplifier first?

there is only capacitor (to remove dc offset) and two resistor voltage divider (to get 0.5v pp) and this is connected directly to the amplified speakers

This is not PWM. It's 50% duty cycle with frequency change. It's a common mistake made by a lot of people. PWM use the same frequency with changing duty cycle.
