"The 1st Mrs. Jones" by Porter Wagoner-
I put this video together as a tribute to one of my favorite performers-Porter Wagoner.
Few artists have inspired me both as a singer and performer the way Porter has done & I am honored to run his Official Myspace Page"- myspace.com/porterwagoner
I hope you'll check it out if you like what you hear in this clip. Porter had many nicknames-
"The Thin Man From West Plains", "King of Country Gospel" & "Mr. Grand Ole Opry" just to name a few but it was his "Skid Row Joe" persona which probed the darker side of things that I believe inspires me the most.
Songs such as "The Cold Hard Facts of Life", "Skid Row Joe" & this one have a macabre flavor to go with their traditional country styling which is completely brilliant in my mind.
Porter's recorded career spanned some 55 years and he was a member of The Grand Ole Opry for 50 years as well while being an ambassador to the world for what I like to call "Real Country Music".
Porter also wasn't afraid to step out the box and push the envelope from time to time which was almost unheard of for country music artists of the 1960's. I respect him for this as well but at the core he remained a dyed in the wool country singer who was molded by the likes of Roy Acuff, Red Foley & Hank Williams.
Hank's "Luke The Drifter" recordings had a profound effect on Porter's style and this becomes blatantly apparent in a song like "The 1st Mrs. Jones" which is primarily based upon the sacred art of the recitation.
I hope that this song makes your hair stand up like it does me.
Listen to the words & let it take you way.
Take care,
James
P.S.
The album covers presented in this clip are great introductions to Porter & his music and the 1st three shown (Cold Hard Facts of Life, The Rubber Room & RCA Country Legends) all contain "The 1st Mrs. Jones".
