When you don't know the exact day something happened, you just arbitrarily pick a day and celebrate it on that day. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Just because the first Thanksgiving probably didn't ACTUALLY occur on the fourth Thursday in November doesn't mean we shouldn't celebrate it.
(actually, I don't think we SHOULD celebrate Thanksgiving, but that's a different discussion altogether)
"To me, Independence Day isn't about winning sovereignty from an oppressive government. It's about hot dogs and fireworks with friends." "To me, Memorial Day isn't about paying tribute to soldiers, or the armed forces, or anything like that. It's about spending quality time with family at a picnic." You're entitled to say what you want about the meaning of Christmas, but that doesn't make it correct. Christmas has a specific meaning—it doesn't derive its meaning from what people want it to be
southparkfan, I`m thinking of you and a word springs to mind...SANCTIMONIOUS. drop the soap-boxing. People should just enjoy christmas, whatever their denomination. Many religious festivals have, over the centuries, lost their true meaning, but if that festival brings a cause for good feeling among many, where`s the negativity in that? There`s enough going on in the world to cause depression, let`s grasp the times that cause good cheer. God knows we need it. Big up to Charlie Brown!!
Christmas is not the Winter Solstice. They take place at the same time but Christmas is a Christian holiday and this is what its about. If atheists want to celebrate the winter solstice fine, if they want to get together with family and give gifts fine, that's all just fine. But unless there going to accept "Christmas" for what it is really about, they need to stop saying their celebrating Christmas.
Has anyone ever seen the SNL skit with this? It was animated, and Jesus was walking around New York on Christmas Eve and he was horrified by the scary evangelicals, and when he feels all sad, he sees on a TV this clip, and starts to cry :) Then dances away in a Peanuts fashion :)
Never in my life have I been so touched by anything on SNL.
I don't even think you have to be a Christian to be touched by this

I understand only a few words when I listened to his voice.
