"The debate over legalizing abortion in Ireland flared Wednesday after the government confirmed a miscarrying woman suffering from blood poisoning was refused a quick termination of her pregnancy and died in an Irish hospital.

Prime Minister Enda Kenny said he was awaiting findings from three investigations into the death of Savita Halappanavar, an Indian living in Galway since 2008 who was 17 weeks along in her pregnancy. The 31-year-old's case highlights the bizarre legal limbo in which pregnant women facing severe health problems in predominantly Catholic Ireland can find themselves.

Ireland's constitution officially bans abortion, but a 1992 Supreme Court ruling found it should be legalized for situations when the woman's life is at risk from continuing the pregnancy. Five governments since have refused to pass a law resolving the confusion, leaving Irish hospitals reluctant to terminate pregnancies except in the most obviously life-threatening circumstances."*

Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss the story of Savita Halappanavar, who died after the Catholic hospital refused her repeated requests for an abortion. Are the strict abortion rules and imposed religious morality upheld by the hospital really viable in today's age? Where did the idea of this form of "morality" and religion over human life and suffering even originate, and why do people follow it? Cenk Uygur has an answer.

Leaving aside extreme circumstances like health issues and rape, why would a woman want an abortion? It may be her body but she is carrying another life and to abort just for the sake of her choice is callous in the extreme!

Saying that abortion should be legalized because women will have them anyway is like saying murder should be legalized because murderers kill people anyway.

I agree that people shouldn't force their opinion on others, I also hope that women will choose life!

I understand that only too well. It's not her child, it's the rapist's. It's been forced on her. The trauma is being forced to go through nine months of misery through something's that not her fault.

You are not "real pro-choice". You are pro-life. And that's fine - everyone has the right to think what they like.

I see what you mean now. I suppose men can be forced to an erection by artificial stimulus. But I think it's unlikely to happen unless he was tied up or something. I think it's extremely rare. It doesn't have anything to do with abortion.

Your comment about adoption is insensitive because the woman has already been violated once, and you're asking that she be brutalised a second time. Most women would rather die than give birth to a rapist's child. You're also talking about very late abortions.

But it's about more than "inconvenience". It's about women having power over their own bodies. Why should they be forced to go through a pregnancy they do not want. It is HER body. As I said earlier abortions would still happen if they were not legal, it's just that more women would die, as they did in the past. I think it's wrong for other people to dictate what you should do with your own body. Everyone's allowed their own opinion, but they should not force it on other people.

The reason why women think they can stick a coat hanger in their flange to abort is because abortionists and abortion supporters told women it will work so they will accidently kill their self and because they didn't know the fetuses were living they legalised abortion to stop them dying

The line below that is she died of an e-coli infection 4 days after her baby was removed. She died the same way that women have abortions die of an e-coli infection but when it's reported they don't say those women die from abortion.

So you think a violated women should be put through the trauma of having her child killed in a horrific way? Also some studies have shown a link between breast cancer and abortion.

It is rare for a pregnancy to kill a woman. She would probably be more likely to get run down by a car and the blood someone donated that should save her live has gone for a women who has haemorrhaged after an abortion

If a woman is raped it's still her child as well, don't you understand that?

I am not "pro choice", I am "real pro choice". Premature babies are usually inscape of independent life but technology saves them. Less than a decade ago a premature baby would have died at an age that it can survive now thanks to new machines and medical breakthroughs. A fetus' main organs form in the first month and many are working within 4 months so in the future premature babies will be able to survive earlier.
