To the year 1944 it wa not a CONCETRATION CAMP. It was WORK CAMP! There was no instalation to kill peaople but only to extract stone (it stand today ,you can se it in Spilbergs"list of shindler" ) Plaszow has ben a concetration camp for short time however, like many other Nazi camps, shortages of food existed, prisoners starved or were worked to death, or summarily shot for no reason. Overal number of people killed there is betewen 8 and 12 thousand. There are several memriolas at that area

The site today is very beautiful. How ever as with all sites of this nature it is impossible to grasp what really happened there. The horror of the Nazi murder system cannot be measured. It goes beyond human comprehension. If we do not educate the next generation of young people we are destined to repeat the past. Many school systems now want to drop halocaust education. They say it makes people sad and depressed. Do not let your school systems do this. Speak out. Protest. Get involved.

I think you owe edycalifornia an apology. He didnt mean any disrespect at all towards Poland or the Polish. All he was saying is that for him (and he is only young) Poland is symbolic of what happened there; he did not mean he hates Poland, and even tho he is not Jewish he feels sadness for what has happened there, as most people do. Its empathy, not biggotry. And even tho I dont know him it makes me sad his post was taken so wrongly; attacked so viciously without question.

What really amazes me is the fact that alot of German soldiers, off fighting in the war, had no idea of what was actually going on in these camps. After the war, many were shown films and photos, and alot had developed pshycological conditions because of what they didn't know was going on. Many, reportedly, got sick just watching the films and photos.

From my little knowledge I would have to agree with you vlad. The only way to be sure is to stand on the balconey and look across the camp area. The film was inaccurate in the location but not in the actions.
-
Quite agree. It happens more then we realise. More then it is reported anyway. Will we ever learn?

Behind his villa is a slope. On top of the slope was a pond during WWII. Today there is no pond, its a dry place. If he stands on the balcony, he could see that slope on his left-hand side, but on his right-hand side he could see the north-eastern part of the camp, with at least part of Apelplatz.
Or, at least, that is how the terrain looks today :)
-
His villa was behind the hill, but just partially. From his balcony you can see part of the hill but about one half of Apelplatz was visible.
But as far as I know it is not sure if he ever shot someone from his balcony. But he definitely shot a lot of prisoners...

You can be sure, it already happened.... Cambogia, Rwanda, Bosnia.... It never ends
-
The bad thing is so many survivors are dying of old age that we are losing the living memory of what happened. Then I'm afraid it will happen again....

I believe the Germans tore down the entire camp in early 1945 leaving no substantial evidence as the Russians advanced. There are a few brick/cement foundations hidden in the grass but very little else. Auschwitz was much larger, better built (more brick blocks then Plaszow) and over run before the Germans could destroy much. Dachau is in the heart of Germany and I guess the Germans were too busy defending their own country to destroy much evidence of the camp.
-
So this concentration camp doesn't exist anymore? There are no living land-marks?
How-come? They left Auschwitz and Dachau and most concentration camps as they were - why did they tear this one down?
-
Great info there AmayaCz. I didn't know all that. I did read the book but that was before the film and so long ago I forgot that incident.
I don't see how Goth could have shot prisoners from his main residence unless I was looking at the wrong house in the wrong area. Could 'the hill' be an area behind his house, maybe his garden? That makes more sense and would have been feasible.
Thanks for the feedback.
so there is nothing really left of it?

@Snodgers3rdclass Quite true. I am sure there is a lot of evidence of the camp still there but its covered with grass, bushes and trees. I believe the site is protected in the sense that it will stay a park of sorts but it is quite difficult to visulise it as a Nazi work camp. On my first visit to the site I thought I was in the wrong place.
