Clip 3 from the 'The Hidden Ocean of Europa' lecture, part of the von Karman Lecture Series. Date- Nov 07. Source- http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/events/lectures/nov07.cfm

'Jupiter's moon Europa may be a habitable world. Evidence points strongly to a global subsurface ocean beneath an ice shell. The paucity of large craters argues for a surface age of only 60 million years, implying that Europa is still geologically active. Tidal flexing and nonsynchronous rotation of the floating ice shell generate stresses that can fracture and deform the surface to create Europa's troughs, ridges, and bands. Europa's astonishing geology and astrobiological potential make it a top priority for spacecraft exploration.'

  • Where is chapter 4 ????

  • the image after he said "why do we care?" at 6:03 was laughable

  • It's a lot like plate tectonics on the surface, but the ocean from underneath is causing the ice to crack. Also, huge temperature changes from how cold space is to how warm the ocean underneath could be, causing it to crack, like when you put an ice cube in a drink that's not cold. I REALLY hope I live long enough to to find out we are not alone on this Earth! Great lecture! Is there a Part 4? Thanks for the videos! I LIKE IT!

  • and instead of a negative, they are perfectly fine with an inconclusive. It's not about whether or not life is found, it's about whether or not the experiment can find it. Viking style experiments tested on barren places here on Earth where there is life could not detect life. All Viking experiments prove is that possible life there is not obvious to us.

A probe to drill through ice of Europa is possible, but then again, contamination from earth microbes is also a huge danger.

  • What this lecture establishes is that the tide forces cause an ocean under the surface of Europa. It's hard to imagine any other reason for Europa looking like it does (that does not mean it couldn't be because of other reasons). It does not establish life on Europa. Just like the perceived excess of methane in Mars' atmosphere, it's not a smoking gun, it's an indication that biological activity like on Earth might be going on. A lot of scientists have reviewed the data from Viking landers,

  • I have no special knowledge. But if life has any patterns to it...symetry...then there is life on Europa.

  • super doku

  • good lecture. Isn't there a part 4 somwhere?

  • good video, and the guy was very clear too

    good lecture

  • lmao!
