U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett got a rousing reception from about 2,000 supporters of health care reform at a forum in downtown Austin on Saturday afternoon.

The event, sponsored by the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org, drew enough people to pack the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church near the Capitol as well as two other nearby spillover sites with people still left on the sidewalks.
"Your presence indicates we are not going to back down," Doggett, D-Austin, said.

He urged the crowd to push for the inclusion of a new public health care option in the legislation. Support for that provision has wavered in recent weeks, and some lawmakers have suggested a nationwide health care cooperative as an alternative to the public option.

"Let's not be co-opted," Doggett said.

  • Excellent speech by our Congressman on health care reform and the need for a public option. If you were not fortunate enough to have been at the forum this past Saturday, August 29, you should definitely take the time to view Doggett's full speech!

  • Doggett does not get it. By the way, Austinites should unite and oust the liberal mayor, too

  • Nation building will be the ruination of our country. Repbulicans will vote every time to spend money in some other country but they never want to nation build in this country.

  • With all his bussed in astroturf thugs, there was no room for his"neighbors" as he likes to call them. What a waste of time. THIS CANNOT PASS; It will be the ruination of our country.
