Vinyl (MCS 6700) - Miles Davis - So What

Turntable: MCS 6700 Direct Drive
Phono Cart: Denon DL-110
Preamp: Rega Fono Mini
Stereo: Marantz 2235b

Recorded at 24/96 (24-bit, 96kHz) on Audacity.

Notes -- The title track to the greatest jazz album of all - Miles Davis' Kind of Blue (1959). So What is one of the most well-known and beloved of jazz standards, and there really isn't more to say. Just play the album and enjoy.

This LP is a 1970s Colombia pressing. The quality is excellent, and original vinyl copies of Kind of Blue are difficult to come by. But the ideal LP pressing is the original 1959 "six eye" in stereo and mono. As this album was recorded in stereo - 1958's Porgy and Bess was the first stereo Miles Davis album - the mono version is simply a fold-down of the stereo mix. All later pressings are in stereo, so you may consider the mono version a prized addition to your music library, if you are so lucky.

The MCS 6700 turntable was JC Penny's top-line model of the late 1970s. It's a rebranded Technics SL-1900 with a larger frame, more stylish buttons, and the same excellent Technics sound. It's a terrific turntable.

The phono cartridge is the always-excellent Denon DL-110, a high-output moving coil. The phono preamp is the Rega Fono Mini, a sterling champ that is sadly overlooked. And the stereo receiver is my venerable Marantz 2235b from 1977.
