Monroeville is the county seat for Monroe County, Alabama. Monroe County was founded in 1815 on lands ceded by local Native American tribes. Monroeville, once known as Centerville, was renamed for James Monroe and incorporated on April 15, 1899. However, there is record of the first municipal election being held January 23, 1858 to incorporate the town of Monroeville with a 14 to 0 vote in favor of incorporation.
Monroeville is best known as the home of two highly successful writers: Pulitzer prize-winning Harper Lee, an author most famous for her novel To Kill A Mockingbird, and world-renowned author and popular-culture icon Truman Capote. Mark Childress, novelist, and Cynthia Tucker, syndicated columnist and winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary, were also born in Monroeville.
