First ever episode of Rentaghost. Split into 3 parts.

Aired in 1976 and written by Bob Block. In this opening episode, Fred Mumford returns from the spirit world and opens the agency Rentaghost, which offers ghosts and poltergeists for hire on a daily or weekly rental. Uploded for posterity.

Fred Mumford: Anthony Jackson
Hubert Davenport: Michael Darbyshire
Timothy Claypole: Michael Staniforth
Mr Meaker: Edward Brayshaw
Mrs Mumford: Betty Alberge
Mr Mumford: John Dawson

Probably the greatest theme tune ever!

- Bob Block, writer of many comedies including Rentaghost passed away peacefully in his sleep 17th April 2011, aged 89. My respect and condolences go out to all his remaining family and to Bob himself for providing so many thousands of us with happy memories. Bob, you will never be forgotten in our hearts and minds -

  • I have been finding all of my favourite 70 and 80 TV programmes on YouTube and now I found the first ever episode of Rentaghost, I am so excited that I have just wet myself for the 100th time.

I am sorry to hear about Bob Block has dies. Rentaghost may not be Beetlejuice but it has given me joy as a kid and now watching this on Youtube has givem me more joy. As for the American version, if it appears, it won't be ever the same. Do they understand it at all?

  • @Metaliant01 Its way better than Beetlejuice anyway :)

  • If the Hollywood film version has a Scottish witch, a gay jester, a pantomime horse or Christopher Biggins in it I will be very surprised!

  • @Gmackematix If it had all of them and made money, all the Hollywood producers would fall dead from a mass stroke :)

  • @Hitchmeister Hi Hitch. I'm very sad to have to tell you that my dearest Dad, Bob Block who wrote Rentaghost and so many other brilliant comedies, died peacefully in his sleep yesterday 17th April 2011, aged 89. Thank you so much for all of your dedications to him and his work. We as a family are so proud of his creative genius and will be continuing to try and bring his writing to a larger audience. Thanks again, and best wishes. Trish Bignell (nee Block)

  • I used to LOVE rentaghost. SO daft and hilarious. Claypole, Mistress Meeker, Dobbin etc.

  • I used to work with a guy who was the spitting image of Mr Claypole, so that quickly became his nickname. This guy later joined the police and his colleagues also nicknamed him Claypole.

  • Just when I thought that things couldn't get any worse with every other great tune of my youth being sampled. remixed and rapped over..... I find out that this gem of my childhood is the subject of a Hollywood film involving of all people, Ben Stiller. How can this be? Is nothing sacred?

  • @Hitchmeister Most definately.

  • @Hitchmeister Thank fuck Brand isn't in it! There seems to be a lot of remakes happening these days of old classics, especially in Hollywood. I think the film writers have run out of original ideas & are only remaking old films to cash in with a new generation who haven't seen the original. A lot of things seem to be about just making money these days & nothing to do with actual talent. The music industry is just the same. I dread the future of the world when everybody seeks quick buzzes...

  • i agree with deankhan123,i'm the same age, everything now is put-together with the accountants lurking in the background
