The Tercel never came as a factory ragtop. The Paseo did,but they are so rare I have only seenone and it was on Craigslist.I actually bought an 88 Tercel coupe from a salvage yard last year with plans of a similar procect. But the head gasket blew first.
Right now I have an 88 Sen\tra coupe tah I bought with the saame intention. But I need another car before I can cut this one up.

Hello. Thank you for this very valuable & safe information. You just may have saved my life. Now I will not make my own convertible - BUT I do have a question - Why did you recommend purchasing a Saab if I wanted a convertible?? Now would that be a factory Convertible Saab OR would that be a do-it-yourself Convertible Saab?? Thank You. Sincerely, JAMES.

@buzzclark Saab has factory convertibles that are built amazingly strong, the doors overlap the rocker panel so on a side impact they dont cave in also the rocker is thick steel that goes up the A pillar and around the windshield like a roll bar, not all are built like that. also it is not uncommon to buy a 94 or older under $1500 also if you look up ( SAAB Convertible crash test ) or (Convertible Saab flipped over) then something like ( dodge neon crash test ) you can watch the differance.

Hello. I feel like doing this myself - however, I have heard that if the body of the car is not sufficiently reinforced to stabilize a convertible & hold the rest of the body together without the top part & door pillars you could have devastating & disasterous results out on the road. Has your Tercel held up well over the period of time?? I'd really appreciate some feedback. Thank You. Sincerely, JAMES.

@buzzclark the tercel started bending within 1 week of driving it in normal conditions, it kept twisting till the doors didnt fit but I kept re-aligning them. if I had an accident I would be safer driving an accordion. in a front hit the dashboard will come down in your lap and the windshield will take your head off, even if I welded in support bars it would not be as strong unless I built a roll cage. every time I drove I thought of a tierod end snapping and flipping flattening the windshield.

@buzzclark even though it was so fun to drive it was dangerious and stay tuned because I am going to make a video of it with a blow up doll driving it into a boulder before I scrap it. so you will how bad it is. if you want a convertible do what I did and buy a Saab. even when I put it on my lift with the top down the doors dont bend.

Excellent choice in music, unlike so many other Youtube videos...
It seems like the Tercel looks pretty good as a convertible. Remove the back seats and extend the trunk about half-way into that space, and then build a retracting vinyl roof - it'll be really awesome then. (though I imagine it's gone by now)

@howitzer86 odly enough I still have the tercel and I did put a piece of plywood over the back seat to give it the 2 seater look and this week I will video it starting up for the first time this year and I will be putting a blow up doll in it and she will drive it into a boulder blowing the air bag
