I don't really hear much of a difference. And how is a remix original?

All that was added really was the melody into a guitar, which didn't even deviate much from the vocal melody.

That and sort of a monotone-like added percussion section.

The opening sounds a little cluttered, as you said; "odd", as well as several other parts throughout the song, but overall, I think you did a good job. Keep practicing is what I suggest. ^^
