Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Saue Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Sauer was noted for his aristocratic approach to music-making, with lashings of charm, elegance and style backed up by phenomenal technique.

Beethoven is not a composer much associated with Sauer. His tendencies seem to lie more with the mainstream romantic repertoire. This recording of the famous opening movement of the Piano Sonata in C# minor op.27 no.2 (the "Moonlight") was made around 1923.

  • I just couldn't stop listening, although I've heard the piece played hundreds of times.

I'm sure von Sauer had the magical performance of Liszt himself in mind when he recorded it.

  • Superb! Bravo! TY.

  • Indeed, so does co-Liszt-pupil Lamond, I just realised.

  • op.27 no.2. Very beautiful recording though.

  • Interestingly, co-Liszt-pupil, Friedheim plays the dotted-rhythm melody idea with almost exactly the same rhythmic hesitation before the downbeat as Sauer does. I have posted his performance here too.

  • No, this is a live recording.
