No, you don't have to cut it's mane short for any physical reason. It accentuates the black stripe in the middle which looks really cool. If you plan to show your Fjord then you might have to present it according to breed standards. Check the Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry and the Canadian Fjord Horse Association for rules. When the mane is sculpted properly it visually minimizes faults and maximizes the horse's good points.
