in honesty i love the fact that Ares loves Xena so much. Trough out the whole show he has been trying to be with Xena, because she is everything he is but as a woman ( maybe even better). Ares wanted Xena to have his children... but she kept telling him no....i f honestly feel bad for Ares bc he loves Xena and she countinued to deny him, even though SHE actually loves him too, but doesnt want to admit it.

Ares grief that he'd killed Xena is proof of how much he really loved her. He loved her more than he could have ever loved anyone in my opinion. Just look at his agony at the thought that he'd not only beaten her down, but caused her to drown. If she hadn't come back, he would have been a mess.
