No that WAS NOT the reason for the heel turn. Dibiase was supposed to face Bob Roop for the North American title, and if he lost he would have to leave Mid-South. JYD ended up with the title winning it in the Superdome, and therefore picked up Roop's commitments, including the match with Dibiase. They hyped the match, and played it serious, Dibiase and Dog were friends and loved each other, (Dog was legit Dibiase's best man at his wedding.) but business is business in the ring.

Wrestling is not FAKE, it's scripted. They know who the winner is gonna be and all that, but is you think these guys don't get seriously injured try doing what they do 300 days a year!

It was in Mid South. Up until 1981, DiBiase was a hugely popular babyface in Georgia and Mid South. He turned heel by turning on JYD. In the storyline, he blamed the Dog for what happened to him.
