This is so very interesting! This is what I would like to see on the Mardi Gras if I get to go to New Orleans one day, not the beads and topless stuff..
This is just beautiful, I can imagine lots of hours of work to make those outfits.

I've been to the Notting hill Carival a few times , but i'm sure thats nothing Compared to your city at Mardi Gras time. I have to say i've been watching HBOs Treme , and i absolutely love it . The music is incredible and the people are fantasic !!

@lamak0925 no competition. the different indian clans dress up in these costumes on various special occasions - not just mardi gras - and are usually accompanied by drums and tambourine. Exactly when and where they appear seems very random except to insiders. Like most new orleans traditions, its origins are quite murky but go back hundreds of years...

thanks for the details, very helpful.
1600's with the Indian Village of Tchoutchuoma, which stood quietly and peacefully, in or very near the north gate of the colonial spot of what became the original New Orleans, French Quarter. Since the early 1800's, the cultural differences of the French, Spanish, and Anglo fostered a rivalry between districts. These racial and cultural differences were passed on, to the African American community as well, and indeed exists even today. It's just Mardi Gras with a blend of traditions.
