Channel One News is controversial for many reasons. One is the fact that the program doesn't cover much news. The main purpose of the program is to get advertising in front of a captive audience of students.
Covering lots of news stories is expensive. So Channel One News doesn't do that. They instead use "filler" stories to pad their show. These feature stories cost very little and have a long shelf life. Once filmed they can be shown immediately or two years from now.
This video is a good example of how Channel One News wastes school time and therefore taxpayer money.
This story may be motivational, but it has nothing to do with current events.
It also might be the wrong type of motivation. Check out MuffinMilk's website. Don't click on "enter" so you can hear the two songs that MuffinMilk has chosen to welcome young people. The second one is truly awful. ( http://www.muffinmilk.com ) and the utterly filthy Lil Wayne song (Goin' In) the company has as its official welcoming song. Check out the entrepreneur, Gary "The Muffin Man" Jiang, in this video at http://muffinmilk.com/site/#/about/people/gary
Notice he has "FBGM" after his name. Why is this guy being plugged on Channel One?? http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fbgm
This feature story including the reporters setting it up takes 4 minutes and 22 seconds out of the school day. Multiply that by the number of students forced to watch this and the figure is breathtaking.
What if on this one day in the 2009/10 school year, this MuffinMilk video hadn't been shown and that time was used for academic purpose?
Schools that continue with Channel One News have only themselves to blame for their poor academic performance.
