Thanks for this.
I am planning to make a solo cob house and I now know it will be possible to do myself!

we have it backwards here. Cob is the far superior way to build. silly perceptions people have sometimes, seeing a cookie cutter house as prettier or somehow better. Here in AZ I am going to start a small one room once the barn is done and can't wait to start. the clay is excellent here and there is plenty of it and sand and also juniper. I was unsure I would be able to do it solo, as I probably will, hopefully before winter and then I saw this. Thanks for telling the story.

That makes sense to me. I'll need to make sure I master waterproofing since it's pretty wet in some areas. There's a rain forest up there. Wrangle Island is a paradise but it gets 90" of rain. I'll have to see if they have clay there or what kind of dirt it is. Thanks.
What part of the country is this house? Could this work in areas like Anchorage?

In Oregon. I've never been to Alaska, but I think that straw bales would be more appropriate there, to provide more insulation.
