This is a segment from a 1987 WCVB-TV special about the station's history. WCVB signed on the air in 1972 after Boston's original Channel 5, WHDH-TV, was stripped of its license by the FCC.

  • Incidentally, the still photo @ :47 shows an Ampex AVR-1 quad VTR being delivered to the new Channel 5. Standing on the right are general manager Robert Bennett and president Leo Beranek.

  • True.

As the fight over Channel 5 was quite contentious, the Herald-Traveler, WHDH-TV's owner, wished to do nothing that would help their rival. The new Channel 5 had to build their own facilities and make arrangements with Group W for antenna space on WBZ's tower.

I understand that ABC purchased WHDH's mobile unit(s), but am uncertain about the disposition of the rest of their equipment. The old WHDH building was converted to offices for a banking company.

  • Does anyone know the name of the jazz tune @ 2:45 that was used as the "Good Morning" theme?

  • Frank Avruch, who, in addition to playing Bozo the Clown, did announcing on WHDH as well.

  • Can anyone identify the original 1982 theme from "Chronicle" at 3:58? Was it a piece of production music or was it a custom for WCVB?

  • Nor was WCVB's ABC affiliation by choice: CBS, with which the old WHDH-TV was affiliated in its last 11 years (1961-72) under Herald-Traveler ownership, wanted no part of the new owners' broadcasting plans, so the network switched back to WNAC-TV for its Boston affiliation.

Also, besides Jack Hynes and Don Gillis, I'm curious as to who else of the old WHDH-TV air talent went to the new WCVB-TV at the time of the switch.

  • Not only was this the 15th anniversary of WCVB-TV, it was the 30th anniversary of there being a Channel 5 in Boston. And I could see what they meant by "starting from scratch": It seemed, in part, an allusion to the fact the the owners of the old WHDH-TV refused to hand over their Morrissey Avenue studios to the new station, in contrast to when RKO lost the WNAC-TV license in 1982 and the new owners of what became WNEV-TV moved in to "7 Bulfinch Place in Boston's Government Center."

  • has anybody noticed that the Ch. 5 Logo looks like Chet Curtis
