Marvellous!! This must be one of Horowitz' greatest Chopin recordings, as well as one of the most glorious recordings of this masterpiece! Gorgeous tone-painting, breathtaking colors, interesting and imaginative treatment but thoroughly Chopinesque...I love his buildup to the climax at the end, and his treatment of the coda. The maestro at his best and most inspired!
J'ai beau écouter mille enregistrements de cette Barcarolle, celui d'Horowitz n'en reste pas moins magnifique; néamoins, seulement trois m'ont bouleversé: celui de Rubinstein, celui de Cortot et celui de Lipatti.
Like Chopin1986, I remember the first time I heard this recording. It blew me away -- the imagination H. uses in creating timbres and varying his touch, richly "orchestrating" and, really, re-imagining the piece in a (to me) totally convincing way. Such passion and, at the same time, finesse -- incredible performance! I particularly love the change of timbre at 8:37, though it came through more clearly on the LP, as I recall.
