In January 2009 - for the first time in twelve years - it was cold enough in the Netherlands for rivers and lakes to freeze. The whole country strapped on skates and took to the ice. For two days I skated on the small lakes and canals in the foggy farmland of De Kaag; following that, I joined the tourtochten on the Ankeveense Plassen and spent the final day Kinderdijk skating in the long shadows of 400 year-old windmills.

  • ???? We could skate in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. And I live in Zeeland. Not much colder than where you live I guess. 1990's were bad though for skating. I my youth (70s and 80s) you could skate every year.
