Will Aliens Be Hostile?

@samason1122 I think animals have empathy for their young and others of their group. A friend of mine hunts deer by blowing his high pitch deer call so the doe think their fawn are in trouble and come out (gruesome I know). But I agree morality is created in small pockets or tribes to promote cohesion in the group. Animals have their version too I'm sure.
Fascinating stuff.

@FantasticBob7000 this is really an interesting perspective that I never thought of. It's so true: morality is a very human thing. It doesn't exist in nature (some may argue that it does, to a small extent, exist among some social groups...and maybe it does). Morals and ethics come with empathy, and humans are the only species we know of that are capable of it. who is to say that aliens will share that ability? Really interesting perspective.

@shades2 Honestly, we deserve that.

We'll make great pets :-)

I think that Stephen Hawking is wrong re the idea that aliens might want to steal Earth's resources; it might be easier to get those resources from asteroids or, possibly, they may have reached a technological stage where they can easily manufacture what they need from abundant base materials.
Then again, blowing up planets, rather than deep mining or manufacturing, might be easier!

@VS24AT They might be like us in 15,000 years, when, hopefully, we will be more socially advanced.

deGrasse's answer was substandard. Assuming aliens will be hostile isn't based on our view of ourselves, it's based on observation of all life on earth. Different species don't treat each other well just as different groups of the same species don't treat each other well. It is scientific observation, not social prejudice about ourselves.

If they are anything like us, we are SCREWED

(cont4) that we do not have it in us to unify together, at this time, and therefore have no reason to contact a species that will self terminate itself out of existence. I think, one day, when we are capable of travel, if we can get past our hate, they will invite a select few for talk...maybe. And just maybe, if we can't get past our hate, yet are capable of travel, they may come here to annihilate us, for their own protection. To advance beyond our own plant, we must advance beyond ourselves.

(cont3) prejudice, and since the Cold War nuclear holocaust has been a reality that dawns closer upon us each and every day. Alien life that is capable of advance technology, I believe, were able to unify together, get past their hatred and differences, and progress together. I my opinion, since they do not harbor hatred for themselves, they may not have any ill intended feeling for us. In fact, the reason I think they don't contact us, if we have been found already, is because they know
We might turn out to be an awesome tasty Inter-galactic delicacy... They might just eat us like scallops or chicken mcnuggets.
