@Moooperator Edison dubbed all the cylinders from diamond disks after the fire in 1914. It was a cost saving measure, mainly because they didn't have to pay the artist's to record twice for each song.

@jazzgirl1920s: That might've preserved many radio shows that have been lost (a lot of early episodes of The Lone Ranger and a bunch of post-Orson Welles The Shadow for example)

Hello Moo, I have added my Beethoven playing Yes! We have no Bananas as a video response.
If you go to my channel "sanfranphono" you can also see an Edison Long Play phono playing a 24 minute records.
Cheers, and thanks for all the great videos.

I saw an ad for a book with a history of Edison records. It mentioned a 40 minute record. I have never heard of this before. Did Edison sell a record with a 40 minute playing time in the 1920s? It would have been really nice if Edison had sold recording blanks for home use with that long a playing time because they could have been used to record radio broadcasts. You could get a lot of a 1 hour radio show on one of those discs.

I also have an Edison Beethoven, in excellent condition. It works as well as this one and is in comparable condition. It also has a substantial collection of discs with it. It's a very cool machine.
WFMU played the cylinder version of this recording. The disc sounds way better.

@TheMaxx111 Most likely that super rare cylinder was dubbed from the disc. Edison did this at the end of record production in the late 20's to cut costs.

The long play records were a disaster as the grooves were so fine the diamond head would skip easily. The machine also had to be perfectly level. These were still played acoustically until his tube machines were introduced shortly before he threw in the towel on phonographs.

Why does this Edison sound so much better than others I've heard? I have a couple of California Rambler disc that are pretty jazzy. Jim and Tom dorsey are the stars in that group.

It has three things going for it. The record is an electrically recorded 52K series. The reproducer is an Edisonic reproducer which has a heavier weight and the horn is slightly longer than the lab models. It is a shame when Edison was begining to perfect his recording process and machines that he shut down the phonograph side of the business.
