No it doesn't bind you to the material world. These are sacred herbs. Don't confuse alcohol, opiates and stimulants with entheogens. Certainly the addictive and ego-reinforcing drugs bind you. But not all substances present in the plant kingdom have that effect. Some worship with Tulasi, others with Ayahuasca. Both have intention of connecting with God.

Soma, yes the Lord is the enjoyer and He can drink any amount of soma or do any kind of activity we may not do. He is our master and we are His servant. As long as we break His rules. we are subject to stay in this material prison house and to go to the hellish planets to atone for our miss behavior. That's all if you like those hellish planets. But if not.... you could stop, atone here and go home this lifetime too. Taking the fastest road home apeals to very few.....

Everything a devotee is taught about intoxications is backed up by shastric evidence. Other than that it's all mental speculation. i can only judge by what i have read in our law books written by Shrila Prabhupada. If any devotee of Krishna has an arguement what what i have said here, then that arguement is with Srila Prabhupada. You may not know about who he is, but this devotee does and, this devotee IS WRONG about marijuana not being a drug.

Not all scriptures are true, and not all Truth is backed by scriptures. I just have to comment and say that I don't think you have any right to judge Jhulanya. You don't know this person and cannot say she is doing something wrong when marijuana is a socially constructed thing. You percieve it to be wrong because society told you it's wrong. But if you want scriptural evidence... what was the God's favourite drink: Soma... which has been proven to be a cocktail of various drugs.
