iPhone Thieves Get Pwned!

It was an iPhone theft ring foiled by phones that were smarter than the thieves. Police say two of the iPhone devices were swiped Tuesday from the Apple Store in the Palisades Mall.

Working with Apple, Clarkstown police used the device serial numbers to activate the built in GPS on the phone, giving them an exact location of the suspects. By law all cell phones sold today must have tracking capability.

Police tracked the phones to a parking lot in nearby Orangetown. They arrested a 22-year old and 25-year-old both from Spring Valley.

Neither suspect has a criminal record, but police say the two had been busy of late. In their car, police recovered four additional iPhones allegedly stolen in August from malls in Paramus, New Jersey and Huntington Station, Long Island.

Besides allowing police to activate the GPS, the iPhone lets owners log on and track their lost phone and even kill their device remotely.
